Call to Worship

One: Watch out, people of God! Be aware; be wary.

For today we ask God’s Spirit to fill us that we may dream dreams and see visions. Today, worship calls us to be touched by holy fire.

Many: Even now the flames of Spirit may dance above our heads, igniting our call to be peacemakers and prophets, as followers of Jesus.

Even now, the Spirit’s flames may be burning into our hearts:

animating us, leaving us restless until God’s harmony and justice and joy and wholeness fill the earth, as the waters fill the seas.

Peacemakers and prophets; dreamers and visionaries:

let us all worship with courage and with hope.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer of Invocation (in unison)

Amazing God, who created humanity as one people, come among us now to reunify us. Out of our differences, create understanding and eagerness to explore the variety among us. Out of our narrowness, fashion a breadth of involvement to feed our spirits. May we dream dreams and see visions. May we truly hear our sisters and brothers and respond to them with empathy and love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

*Hymn: #11 Source and Sovereign               ABERYSTWYTH

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession

O God, we have built cities for ourselves. We have sought fame and fortune. We have rushed through our days with unseeing eyes, stopped-up ears, and dulled emotions. We are more often enslaved by our fears than freed by your grace. We demand proof of your existence but ignore the work of your hands. We reject Jesus Christ as an impractical visionary. Your Holy Spirit is unreal to us because we insist on being in charge. Have mercy on us, holy God, and save us from ourselves. Amen.

Moment of Silent Prayer

Assurance of God’s Love

One: God’s greatest joy is the moment when a son or daughter opens to the gift of forgiveness. You who have repented: God forgives you. Receive the Spirit of life!

Many: In the name of Jesus Christ we belong to God, by grace. The Spirit makes us newly alive. Thanks be to God! Amen.

*Gloria: #584  Glory, Glory, Glory

Glory, glory, glory, glory be to God on high! (repeat)

And on earth peace to all people in whom God is well pleased.

Responsive Psalter: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b

One: Holy One, how many and varied are Your works!

Many: In wisdom You have made them all;

The earth is full of Your creatures.

There is the sea, vast and spacious,

With its creatures beyond number

Living things both small and great.

There go the ships,

And the sea monster that You formed to frolic there.

These all look to You to give them their food when it is due;

When You give to them, they gather it up;

When You open Your hand,

They are filled with good things.

When You hide Your face,

They are terrified;

When You take away their breath,

They die and return to their dust.

When You send forth Your breath, they are created;

And You renew the face of the earth.

May the splendor of the Most High endure forever;

May the Almighty rejoice in the works of creation.

God is the one who looks on the earth and it trembles,

Who touches the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the Creator as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

May my meditation be pleasing to the Eternal One,

As I rejoice in my God.

Honor the Holy One, O my soul.
