Why I Love Love Stories
by Jenn Oberto
I’ve always been a sucker for a real-life love story. Nothing delights me more than learning how a long-time couple met, and I love hearing stories of non-romantic love.
This past Tuesday, January 28, the hand bell choir had their annual winter potluck dinner. This event has quickly become one of my favorite times of fellowship with members of this faith community. We gather in Mary Davidson’s parlor, warmed by the fireplace and good food. Inevitably, people start sharing stories:
- Stories about how someone met their significant other.
- Stories of how beloved family traditions came to be.
- Stories about a loved one who is no longer with us, but whose memory brings joy.
- Stories about a time someone was sure they were “doomed,” only to be helped by a stranger, or someone they only knew superficially.
These are all love stories. I left the potluck gathering feeling nourished in body and soul. In times when it feels like love is being overshadowed by fear and hate, these stories are comforting and affirming for me, as I imagine they are for all of us.
Then I had a thought – wouldn’t it be fun if we all shared love stories with each other? It might be a wonderful way to get to know one another in a way that a brief chat at coffee hour or before Sunday worship might not allow.
So, I figured I’d put my idea out there. This may flop – or it may take on a life of its own. I am curious to see how storytelling might open up new fellowship opportunities and points of connection. If this resonates with you, let’s spread some love! Send me your story using this link.
